The story of Carmo rooftop

Our Story

The Carmo Convent is one of the most iconic landmarks in Lisbon. It was built in the late 1300s as a grand Gothic church, once the biggest in the city. But in 1755, a massive earthquake hit Lisbon and destroyed much of it. The roof collapsed, and instead of rebuilding it, the people decided to leave it open to the sky — as a reminder of what happened.
